Recent fires blazing in Central California are a graphic reminder of the fire dangers which may be in store for San Diegans this fall. These fires are a wake-up call for San Diego if predictions of fire officials are realized. Dry brush, advanced vegetation growth in the canyon, and dry hot winds are a prescription for wild fire. South University City is in a vulnerable location with only one internal road for evacuation: Genesee Avenue . OUR VULNERABILITY, CAUSED BY RELYING ON A SINGLE ROAD FOR ACCESS / EGRESS, IS CLEARLY DEMONSTRATED ON THIS PAGE.

The Regents Road Bridge will connect Regents Road at Rose Canyon and provide that crucial, second north/south street. CONTACT THE CITY COUNCIL MEMBERS, MAYOR SANDERS AND CITY ATTORNEY JAN GOLDSMITH, AND URGE THEM TO PLEASE CONTINUE TO MOVE THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE REGENTS ROAD BRIDGE FORWARD ! THE COUNCIL VOTED TO BUILD THE BRIDGE THREE YEARS AGO! (For email addresses for these 8 city officials click on “Act Now” link). Email the mayor at jerrysanders@sandiego.gov and Jan Goldsmith at cityattorney@sandiego.gov .

Opponents of the bridge are showing themselves in a poor light by making charges that are, at best, disingenuous.

Friends of Rose Canyon (FRC) and the University Community Planning Group (UCPG) are challenging the City for using FBA funds for the Limited Roadway Changes (LRC) at Genesee and SR52 and Regents and SR52. These LRCs are part of the whole Regents Road Bridge project. FRC and UCPG say that former council president Scott Peters is misusing FBA funds by allocating them for these changes. In a January 17, 2008 article in the La Jolla Village News, Linda Colley, Chairwoman of the UCPG, stated that for Peters “to use FBA funds for a bridge project in South University City is against North University City 's plan.” Deborah Knight, president of FRC, said in the same article, “The City is using the FBA as a cookie jar.”

The irony of these charges is that the UCPG board recommended to the City Council, in July of 2006, that they do these Limited Roadway Changes. A majority of that board consists of bridge opponents and FRC members. You can read the complete article in which the misleading statements from the bridge opponents are quoted here :

GOOD NEWS

On September 4, 2007, the City Council voted 6-1 to approve the contract for the preliminary design of the Regents Road Bridge, thus moving to Phase II of the project. This means that work on the bridge design can finally begin. THIS IS A GREAT VICTORY FOR THE UNIVERSITY CITY COMMUNITY! Phase II has been delayed for over a year because of bridge opponents’ lawsuits. Opponents will persist in their attempts to derail the Bridge and continue to hurl accusations of illegalities and corruption at city officials. However UC Connection will persevere with our fight for the Bridge which is the only reasonable solution for the traffic woes and safety problems in this area. If you are not a member and wish to join us in this endeavor, please print & fill out our application form and mail it, with a $15 donation, to UC Connection. You can obtain our application form as a Microsoft Word document here, or as an Adobe Acrobat document here. The mailing address is on the application form.

MANY THANKS TO ALL WHO HAVE HELPED US REACH THIS POINT IN OUR QUEST FOR THE REGENTS ROAD BRIDGE!

Just how important is this bridge to the UC community?
